The Loggerhead shrike is one of three animal species with a protected status that may live at the Jordan Sands mine site. Two shrikes, either of this sort or a northern shrike, were identified in the area during a biologist’s visit, on Oct. 26, 2012. The mine company has agreed not to clear period outside the nesting season, May 15 through July 31, unless it hires a qualified biologist to identify Loggerhead shrike nests.
