The New Dakota Memorial at Riverfront Park in Mankato carries a poem by Mankatoan Katherine Hughes and a prayer by the late Dakota elder Eli Taylor. The memorial commemorates the U.S.-Dakota War and the hanging of 38 Dakota on Dec. 26, 1862, the largest mass execution in U.S. history. It was erected in Reconciliation Park in Mankato in 2012, the 150th anniversary of the war and the hanging.
