SOUTH BEND TOWNSHIP —
A fire in LeHillier late Thursday afternoon left five people homeless, but none of the residents were home when the fire started.
The South Bend Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire call at 5:20 p.m. and were still contending with the smoky blaze an hour later. The home appeared to be a total loss.
The property at 809 LeHillier St. is owned by Darold Schaefer and his wife and is rented by his stepdaughter, Danielle Dahlsten, along with her fiancé Dan Weber, their young daughter and Dahlsten’s father and his wife.
