---- — MANKATO — A Kentucky man facing bank robbery charges in Blue Earth County has been charged in federal court.
A grand jury reviewing the case indicted George Richard Gaunt, 25, and issued an indictment Wednesday charging him with one count of bank robbery, a U.S. Department of Justice news release said. Gaunt is accused of robbing the Peoples State Bank in Eagle Lake on Oct. 15.
Gaunt was arrested after leading police on a short car chase. During the chase, he allegedly called 911 and asked a dispatcher to tell officers he was pulling over and giving up. The dispatcher reported Gaunt said he didn't want to get shot.
Gaunt and another man were already wanted by Iowa authorities who suspected they had robbed the Keystone Savings Bank in Center Point, Iowa. They became suspects after investigators were given a loan application that bank employees said had been partially filled out by the robber.
Although the information on the form said the robber was from Wisconsin, a social security number, phone number and name of a city that were provided were all from Kentucky. Investigators were able to use an address on the form to find a phone number. A man who answered at that number said he was related to Gaunt.
A car witnesses seen in the area of the bank was registered to the other man, 29-year-old Justin Wade. Local authorities said there is no evidence showing Wade was involved in the Eagle Lake bank robbery.
Gaunt also is a suspect in bank robberies in other states. Only the federal charge in Minnesota was available for a public records search Thursday.
