MANKATO — The Mankato West football team was seeded second for the upcoming Section 2AAAAA football playoffs at a coaches meeting Thursday, but even though the Scarlets will get a first-round bye, coach Mark Esch was disappointed with the vote.
"We feel like we're the 1 seed," he said. "We'll have to prove it on the field."
The Scarlets won 6 of 8 games this season but had to forfeit the first four victories because an ineligible player was used. That player has since been reinstated, and in the case of forfeits, the Minnesota State High School league recommends that a coaches' vote determine the seedings and teams be ranked according to their status at the beginning of the playoffs.
Chanhassen (5-3) was seeded first, followed by West (2-6), New Prague (5-3), Chaska (5-3), Northfield (1-7) and Waconia (1-7). West will host the winner of Tuesday's game between New Prague and Waconia at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
An update will be coming later on all area teams' pairings for the playoffs.
