Former Lor Ray Deli Mart re-opening under Freyberg Management

Shell station to be managed by Freyberg Management

NORTH MANKATO —The former Lor Ray Deli Mart will be re-opening around Feb. 1, under new management and doing business as Shell on Lor Ray.

Manager Tyler Freyberg, with Freyberg Management, said soil testing is underway and ownership paperwork is not finished, but he expects the deal to go through. The company received soft drink and tobacco licenses Monday night from the North Mankato City Council, which wished Freyberg well and welcomed him to the city.

Tyler Freyberg is related to Councilman Bob Freyberg, who recused himself from the license vote.

Freyberg currently operates a Shell station at Highway 14 and Third Avenue. He said the new station, at 1711 Lor Ray Drive, will be similar to the old except that it will sell Shell gas, which he said is of a higher quality. Likewise, he said the food at the deli mart was good, but that they’ll try to make it better.

The deli mart’s previous owner, Jeff Enggren, closed the business on Dec. 9 after 33 years of operation. He said at the time that fuel sales were falling amidst competition from local grocery stores offering gas incentives.

Fryberg said Shell partners with Hy-Vee, so customers of that grocery chain will be able to use their gas rewards at Shell on Lor Ray.
