Here are a few things we’ve learned after Week 6 which should have some bearing on fantasy.
It appears the Denver Broncos are for real. After getting out to a 4-0 start after beating mostly mediocre teams, the Broncos defeated the New England Patriots 20-17 on Sunday. Brandon Marshall caught two touchdowns, Eddie Royal had 10 catches for 90 yards and the Broncos’ defense seems legit. Keep them all in your lineup.
The Cincinnati Bengals also seem for real as they bested Baltimore 17-14 Sunday. Cedric Benson has moved into the upper echelon of running backs with 120 yards and a touchdown.
If the Broncos and Bengals are genuine NFL contenders, the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills are definitely not. The two played each other Sunday with Cleveland earning a 6-3 victory. Cleveland’s Jamal Lewis and Buffalo’s Marshawn Lynch were respectable but everybody else stunk. Steer clear of these teams and players.
The bubble seems to have burst for Tennessee as well. The Titans dropped to 0-5 with a 31-9 loss to Indianapolis. Starting quarterback Kerry Collins is having problems and that is trickling down to everybody else on offense, as well.
Injury update: Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson suffered a knee injury Sunday and never returned to the game. Johnson is expected to undergo tests and more news will be forthcoming this week.
Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning also suffered a knee injury in Week 5 when he got hit by Kyle Vanden Bosch. It’s the same knee that kept Manning sidelined during the 2008 preseason. He will get treatment this week and his status for Sunday is up in the air.
St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger (shoulder) was pressed into service on Sunday when starter Kyle Boller was knocked out of the game by the Minnesota defense. Bulger led his team on a scoring a drive. Barring any setbacks, Bulger should be good to play this weekend.
Players to jettison: Three big-name receivers who have done little to nothing this year and should be cut from your fantasy team are the 49ers’ Isaac Bruce, Tennessee’s Justin Gage and Buffalo’s Lee Evans. They not longer even have any trade value.
Two running backs who need to go are Seattle’s Julius Jones and Tennessee’s LenDale White. Both can probably be worked into a trade but don’t expect much.
Two quarterbacks who may have been on rosters this past week should be let go for obvious reasons. Buffalo’s Trent Edwards has been terrible against three mediocre defenses the last three weeks. Cleveland’s Derek Anderson was 2 of 17 for 23 yards against a Bills’ defense that had been allowing more than 225 yards through the air per game. There have to be better QBs on the waiver wire.
Players to pick-up: New England running back Sammy Morris will likely be the go-to guy in the backfield now that Fred Taylor is out. Laurence Maroney has been nonproductive, so look for Morris to get the majority of touches the rest of the way.
Miles Austin of the Dallas Cowboys had a huge game Sunday, hauling in 10 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Austin appears to have stepped up with Roy Williams out of the lineup so he’s a viable waiver wire pick-up.
The Colts’ Austin Collie may have moved ahead of Pierre Garcon in the race to replace Anthony Gonzalez in Indianapolis. Two weeks ago he had four catches for 65 yards and a score. On Sunday he had eight receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Stick him in your lineup until he proves he doesn’t belong.
Philadelphia’s Jeremy Maclin had his coming out party Sunday, catching six passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He could be a one-week wonder, but considering DeSean Jackson is the only other quality receiver on the team, Maclin is worth a gamble.
