Haste makes waste, but wins pie-eating contest

Haste makes waste, but beats the competition

Quick thinking and a bold strategic move paid off in a victory for Blue Earth County Commissioner Will Purvis in a pie-eating contest at the Blue Earth County Fair on Saturday.

Purvis and five other contestants were well into laboring their way through apple pies when Corbin Peterson of Bakers Square, who supplied the pies, dropped a bombshell hint.

“The pie plates only have to be empty,” she said.

Without hesitation, Purvis grabbed the pie tin with his teeth and flipped it over, emptying what remained of his tasty pastry onto the table, thereby being declared the winner.

Veteran pie-eating contestant Mankato Mayor Eric Anderson, who has victories under his belt from two previous competitions, could only look on in disbelief.

And Blue Earth County Commissioner Vance Stuehrenberg, a former Mankato cop, declared that the outcome would have been far different, if only it had been a doughnut-eating contest.
