Everyday Eddie's back

The Associated Press a few minutes ago reported that the Twins have traded for erstwhile closer Eddie Guardado.

Many of us have a fondness for Everyday Eddie, and I'm happy to see him back with the team he started with. He's been Texas' primary setup man for much of the season, then was promoted to closer when C.J. Wilson got hurt.

The Twins gave up an Appy League pitcher for him, so it will be a long time before we know if they gave up a lot or nothing for six week or so of him.

He's been through a lot physically since he jumps ship as a free agent, most notably Tommy John surgery. He's been pitching for years with a completely torn rotator cuff — one can only wonder how many painkillers he needs.

So his stuff is probably diminished. But then, stuff was never what Guardado relied on. As long as he still has command and guile, and enough arm strength to get the ball to home plate, he'll be a help.

No word yet on what move the Twins will make to open space on the 25-man roster. My guess is that it will be one of the infielders — Mike Lamb if they're willing to eat next year's salary, Adam Everett if they aren't.

See Guardado's season stats here.
