On Tuesday morning, as noted in the previous post, Baseball America unveiled its list of the Twins' Top 10 prospects. On Tuesday afternoon, its co-editor-in-chief, John Manuel — who pieced the Twins list together — conducted the magazine's chat session about the Twins organization. (Sorry, no link; it's by subscription only).

Manuel offered some insights on things I noted in the previous posting. A few tidbits:

• On Trevor Plouffe: Manuel says the Twins see Plouffe as Greg Gagne. They think he has exceptional hands and will hit for power. Manuel mentions Pat Meares. The Gagne comp is a positive in my view, the Meares comp is not. Manuel's take: Plouffe has not established sufficient command of the strike zone "to get to his power."

* Raves about Aaron Hicks, last June's first round pick. A switch-hitting Torii Hunter with better strike zone judgment; he also compares Hicks to eric Davis. "The sky's the limit."

* Jeff Manship is 11th on the Twins list, he says. More intriguing, because it's a big-picture point about how the Twins operate:

He is another great example of how the Twins get their pitchers ready for the major leagues — by having them pitch big league workloads. Slowey & Blackburn both threw 180-innings plus the year before they reached the majors, and Manship exceeded 190 counting the AFL, and his stuff remained firm in Arizona. I've come around more on Manship. (AFL is Arizona Fall League.)

* I did an earlier posting about the decision to put light-hitting Drew Butera on the 40-man roster. Aaron Gleeman has been critical of the decision; I think it was justified. Manuel agrees with me; Butera "can catch and throw at a big league level now, and could be an effective big leaguer. He could be Mauer's caddy in a year or two if he figures it out with the bat — why give that up when you don't have to?" Protecting Butera was, in Manuel's view, an easy decision.
