Joe Mauer certainly added another line to his growing lore Friday night — after missing the month of April he takes two pitches and hits the third pitch over the fence. One swing, one dinger.
I'm not sure that Friday's triumphant return measures up to his magnificent series against the Los Angeles Dodgers (June 26-28, 2006) when he went 11 for 13 and raised his batting average fro .368 to .392, or the drama of Sept. 28 that same season, when he came up with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth with the Twins trailing Kansas City 1-0 and homered. (The Twins won that game in extra innings, which gave them the chance to win the division title in the final weekend.)
But it was still mighty cool, and something to remember for a long, long time.
(Kudos to Retrosheet for the details.)
