It ended far too late for our press start, but the Twins overcame all their mistakes for a 14-10 win in 13 innings Wednesday night.
The truly pathetic thing about it, statistically, is that Jesse Crain, who balked home the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th, winds up as the winning pitcher. Philosophically, nobody who balks home a run in extra innings deserves the "W".
A couple of other things I want to get off my chest:
• No matter what Bert Blyleven says, that throw from Matt Tolbert in the fourth inning did not short hop Mike Redmond. It was a nice hop, waist high. It was a good throw. Bert and Dick were falling over themselves making excuses for Redmond, but I'm confident that Redmond knows he blew it.
• Luis Ayala cannot be long for this team. It's a noon start on Thursday, so nothing is likely to happen before game time, but I fully expect somebody else to be on the roster when the Twins arrive in New York for their weekend series with the overpaid, over-egoed Yankees.
* Speaking of relief pitchers who were once good and no longer are, the Tigers made room on their roster for Dontrelle Willis by designating Juan Rincon for assignment..
Ayala and Rincon have rather similar career paths, Once first-rate set-up men, they are now fringe arms, in the majors only because every team in baseball is carrying at least 12 pitchers.
