With help from a federal grant and guaranteed loan aimed at reducing rural fuel use, Warren Krohn will be drying corn more efficiently after this fall’s harvest. He’s replacing his propane-powered corn-drying system with a natural air-drying system.

Grant saves farmer energy, money and time

Without pursuing the grant, Krohn wouldn’t have learned about the drying system he’s acquired from Custom Marketing Co. Once he learned about the system, he would have made the switch without the USDA grant, he said.

Krohn also said he’s willing to answer any questions other area farmers might have about the system, which does require large amounts of electricity to run more than one bin. His farm about six miles northwest of Nicollet happens to be near a three-phase line that can provide the power needed.
