MANKATO

When we last visited Mankato metal band Diskord in ’06, the guys were in a pretty good place.

They were on the verge of releasing “Distance to Nowhere,” an album they felt featured the best writing and musicianship of the band’s nine-year career. They also had a pretty healthy fan base. Not many bands stay together in Mankato for a decade. Without a label offering financial backing, the only real payoff to play night after night is the joy of it. And nothing appeals to fans more than a band that genuinely has a great time on stage.

So the news of Diskord’s final show last Halloween came as a surprise to this entertainment writer, who expected to be seeing the band’s name on gig posters around town for at least another decade. The guys — frontman Jeff Zimmerman, guitarist Clark Baker, guitarist Jeremy Buendorf, bassist Trevor Randall and drummer Shawn Sondergaard — they all seemed like brothers. What could have caused the end?

Life. Relationships. Babies. All the grown-up stuff that makes a guy take a look at his priorities and decide what’s most important.

“It was definitely a difficult decision for everyone in the band,” Zimmerman said. “Our fans have been nothing short of spectacular. They’ve been great and very faithful and loyal. So it was tough.”

They all seemed to be headed in different directions, Baker said, and playing so many shows was taking its toll.

Luckily, the decision was mutual. There was no bad blood. Nobody left angry. And all the friendships remained.

So they left a little clause in their break-up agreement that said, if the situation should present itself, a reunion show might be kind of fun.

Which brings us to the present. It’s been less than a year since Diskord called it quits, and the guys already have decided to come back for a show Sept. 13 at Choppers. All the former members will be there.

But you might say there are a couple of ulterior motives. Don’t get me wrong, playing as Diskord will be a great time for the guys. But they also want to showcase what they’ve been up to during the past year — making new music.

Baker and Randall are in a band called Avado, which will play at the show. And Zimmerman’s band Revilwen will, too.

“Honestly, coming from a metal background, Diskord is probably the band that is what I’m more inclined to be like,” Zimmerman said. “But equally, Revilwen has been a very uplifting thing for me.”

Zimmerman had been in bands since 1992.

After Diskord, he was tired. He thought he was done with music for a good, long time.
