Brown County commemorates events of 1862

Historic tours, free admission to BCHS museum Aug. 24

---- — NEW ULM — Brown County historians have organized several educational programs to mark the 151st anniversary of the U.S.-Dakota War.

Activities kick off at 6 p.m. today in the New Ulm Library meeting room. John LaBatte will discuss the events of 1862, which included battles in New Ulm.

Next week's schedule of events is:

Monday

Noon — Lois Glewwe will discuss "The Trail of Tears" during the first Lunch & A Bite of History session in the Brown County Historical Society Annex.

6 p.m. — The movie "Dakota 38" will be screened at Martin Luther College; discussion to follow.

Tuesday

Noon — John Isch will discuss "The Dakota After the War" in the BCHS Annex.

6:30-8 p.m. — tours of the New Ulm Battery, 2000 Spring St.

Wednesday

Noon — Curtis Dahlin will discuss "Civil War Soldiers and the Dakota War" in the BCHS Annex.

6 p.m. — "Family & Friends of Dakota Uprising Victims", contact museum for location.

Aug. 229:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. — Milford Tour.

Noon — Mark Diedrich will discuss "Old Betsey" at the BCHS Annex.

1 p.m. — Leavenworth Tour.

6 p.m. — Mark Diedrich will discuss "Little Crow" at the library meeting room.

Aug. 23

8:30 a.m.and 5:30 p.m. — Leavenworth Tour.

11 a.m. — Katie Gropper Walking Tour for children.

1 p.m. — Milford Tour.

1:30 p.m. — Downtown Battlefield Walking Tour.

Aug. 24

9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. — Milford Tour.

10 a.m. — Book signing session by local authors.

11 a.m. — Katie Gropper Walking Tour for children.

1 p.m. — Leavenworth Tour.

1:30 p.m. — Downtown Battlefield Walking Tour for adults.

Aug. 25

1 p.m. — Junior Pioneers Memorial Service for Dakota War and guided tours of historic graves in city cemetery. Event includes music by Dick Kimmel and Jerilyn Kjelberg, keynote speaker Jeffrey Juni and remarks from New Ulm Mayor Robert Beussman and Darla Gebhardt, BCHS research archivist.

Program subjects may be changed.

Also on display that day, "120 Years of Wanda Gag," works by New Ulm native and author/illustrator of "One Million Cats," with 1 p.m. children's program. Museum regular summer hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults who are not BCHS members.
