---- — MANKATO — Rachael Hanel is a veteran of the craft talks hosted by visiting authors in the Good Thunder Reading Series.
After all, the newly published Madison Lake author has been attending the venerable series hosted by Minnesota State University since she was an undergraduate student in 1994.
But this year, Hanel will be giving the talk as opposed to receiving it.
The author of the 2013 memoir "We'll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down" shares today's installment of the Good Thunder Reading Series with Swati Avasthi, an award-winning young adult writer who teaches at Hamline University. And though Hanel said she's gleaned plenty of sound advice from craft talks in the past, she also said that such advice can be overly dogmatic.
"I think it's good to let the audience know they should always take writing advice with a grain of salt," Hanel said, "and pay the most attention to their own voice."
Today's events include:
Craft talk: 3 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium;
Next up in the Oct. 24 edition of the Good Thunder Reading Series is Alicia Catt, creative nonfiction writer, and fiction writer Alan Davis.
