MANKATO -- The Mankato Symphony Orchestra is hosting its third annual Rockin' by the River event at Riverfront Park on Saturday.
The event is free and open to the public.
Music begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Mankato bluegrass trio The Bitterroot Band. At 7:30 p.m., the MSO will perform favorite orchestral pops, classics from movies, musicals, and a sneak preview of the 2013-14 season.
Voting will also continue through today for a celebrity conductor for the event. Throughout the month, the MSO has been hosting the fundraiser which allows individuals to vote for one of three local celebrities in exchange for a donation. The three celebs are: YMCA CEO John Kind, longtime radio host Pete Steiner and Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps drum major John Mayer.
The Mankato Symphony Orchestra has released its 2013-14 concert schedule. Dates for its Symphonic Series include:
Oct. 6: "This is My Song," music of Sibelius and Brahms;
Dec. 18: "A Christmas Carol," annual Candy Cane Concert
Feb. 9: "Songs About Rainbows," music of Jim Henson and "The Muppets";
March 2: "Deconstructing Rachmaninoff," lecture and performance;
May 4: "Cancion de las Americas," music by Latin American composers.
In addition, the Music on the Hill chamber concert series returns with four concerts and the Family Concert Series, which will now be free, will be "Viva Vivaldi."
