Day at the dam

RAPIDAN -- The Dam Store is hosting a Day at the Rapidan Dam starting at 11 a.m. Saturday (Aug 24) and lasts till dark.

The event will be feature family friendly activities such as live music, pie eating contest, old cars and motorcycles and more.

MSU auditioning for child roles

MANKATO -- The MSU Department of Theatre and Dance will hold auditions for children's roles in "Les Miserables" at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Ted Paul Theatre.

The parts of young Cosette, Gavroche and possibly two or three other children are available. All girls will be asked to sing "Castle on a Cloud" and all boys will be asked to sing "The Beggers." Music cuttings may be found online at www.MSUTheatre.com.

Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday but the children will receive a specific and limited rehersal schedule at that time.

The actress for young Cosette and young Eponine can be no taller than 5-feet. The actor for Gavroche and the other possible children can be no taller than 5-feet-4 inches.

Fort Ridgely remembrance ceremony

There will be a ceremony to remember the soldiers and settlers who lost their lives in the U.S. Dakota War at 3p.m. Sunday at the Fort Ridgely Cemetery south of Fairfax.

The ceremony will take place with the guidance of the Civil War Commemorative Task Force. The event will feature a variety of speakers including Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Pat Gaarder of the Minnesota Historical Society and more.

The event will focus on the soldiers and settlers. The deaths of Little Crow and other Dakotas were remembered at a similar July 6 observance in Hutchinson.

Fair Trade film night

MANKATO -- The Mankato Area Fair Trade Town Initiative will hold its annual Fair Trade film night at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Emy Frentz Arts Guild, 523 S. Second St.

The night will include showings of two movies about fair trade, "Chocolate Country" and "Calcutta Hilton."
