MANKATO – Merely Players debuts "The Taffetas: a Musical Journey through the Fabulous 50s!" on Friday.
The show is about for four would-be singing sisters (Kaye, Cheryl, Peggy and Donna) making their first television appearance on the 1950’s TV show "Spotlight on Music" and hoping to be invited to perform on the "Ed Sullivan Show."
The original cast only consists of the four women, but recent Minnesota State University graduate director Lauren Mikeal Weber chose to include a larger ensemble to aid in capturing the "on-air" feeling of a live TV show. The production has some powerhouse singers who bring the Taffeta sisters to life. The oldest sister (Kaye) is played by Amy Scruggs, the flirt (Cheryl) is brought to life by Jacqueline Teegarden, the Renaissance Woman (Peggy) is delightfully captured by Tylinn Fahrni and Sarah Jesseman is hilarious as the youngest sister (Donna).
Nearly 40 songs are highlighted during the production including “Sh-Boom” "Johnny Angel," "Mister Sandman" and "Where the Boys Are" with the quartet singing in tight harmonies for the entire show. The songs capture the essence of the era.
The off-Broadway musical will be performed at the Lincoln Community Center, 110 Fulton Street. Performances are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, MAy 17 and May 18 as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday and May 19. Tickets are $17 Adults and $11 Youth (12 and under) and can be purchased by calling the TRCA Box Office at 507-387-1008, twinriversarts.org or at the door.
