---- — Area artist earns State Fair prize

ST. PAUL — North Mankato artist Ann Judkins received a second prize in the Fine Arts Exhibition at the Minnesota State Fair.

Each year, the juried exhibit attracts thousands of submissions with only a few hundred accepted. Judkins earned her prize in the "drawings/pastel" category, one of eight categories included in the contest.

"It's hard enough just to get in," said Judkins, who's submitted work to be juried several times but was only selected for the show on one other occasion nearly two decades ago. "I've been in (the show) only once before."

Judkins' piece is titled "Back to Reality" and represents a step forward in the artist's series of works that are inspired by rocks. In addition to working in photography, collage and painting, Judkins began drawing rocks she found in Lake Superior in the 1980s. Finding herself intrigued by their subtleties and peculiarities of shape and color, she has used rocks for subject material ever since.

"This is very fulfilling for me," she said, adding that she was honored by the prospect of "thousands of people passing by and seeing my work every day."

The recently retired Judkins has exhibited her work in several area and statewide galleries. Next year, she is exhibiting a series of works inspired by the number Pi at the Carnegie Art Center as well as a duo show with her artist son, Andrew, next year in Faribault.
