The newly revamped lineup for Mankato band Good Night, Gold Dust is 40 percent smaller.
So how is it the band's sound is fuller than ever on "Come Down," the newly released five-song disc from the fivesome-turned-threesome that includes Colin Scharf, Laura Schultz and Michelle Roche?
Perhaps with less instrumentation, Schultz's soaring vocals and Scharf's similarly soaring lead guitar work are ushered to the fore. Whereas last year's release "Towards the Sun," was a moody, intensely introspective affair, "Come Down" seems conversely spacious. While the title track bears a driving, forward quality accelerated by Scharf's lead guitar, tracks like "Strange Skin" and "Tiles" are piano- and synthesizer-driven ballads that further expand the band's sound.
Of course, audiences can judge for themselves during today's Music and Brews event sponsored by the Mankato Symphony Orchestra.
Good Night, Gold Dust will provide music for MSO's meet-and-greet event that begins 5:30 p.m. at the Mankato Brewery, 1119 Center St. in North Mankato. For $10, visitors can sample Mankato Brewery beers, have snacks, try out MSO instruments and meet the musicians.
