Danielle Nack qualifies for Olympic trials

AUSTIN, Texas — Mankato West sophomore Danillle Nack added to her swimming resume on Sunday, completing the 50-meter butterfly in 1:00.78 at the Long Course Invitational, which qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Nack, who set two state records at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center last month, was at the University of Texas to compete in both the Long Course event and the 2011 Speedo Junior Nationals.

On Thursday, she finished seventh in the nation in the 50-yard freestyle. The following day she placed ninth in the 100-yard butterfly with the third fastest time in the event.

On Saturday, she placed 19th in the 100-yard freestyle before delivering her Olympic Trials qualifying time on Sunday.

“It felt good,” she said. “That was my goal when I came out here.”

At the Minnesota state championships in November, Nack set two state records in the Class A Meet.

Her first state mark came in the 50-yard freestyle where she clocked a 22.93. The second came in the 100-yard butter–fly where she bested the competition with a time of 53.97.

The next Olympic Trials will be held in June of 2012 in Omaha, Neb. For now, the standout swimmer intends to take it easy for a little while.

“I’ll probably take some time off,” she said. “Maybe about a week, and then I’ll be back at it.”
