He attended District #60 Country School in Moltke Township and then parochial school at St. Peter’s Lutheran School. On June 20, 1945, Mel was united in marriage to Bernetta Berg at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Auburn. After marriage, they farmed his families farm in Moltke Township, Sibley County until moving to Gibbon in 1984. Farming was Mel’s passion in life. He and Bernetta loved to travel going on a Mediterranean Cruise and traveling to Russia, Germany, South America, Alaska and Las Vegas were some of the other places they visited. He was a life long member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where he served in positions such as elder, trustee, and usher. He had served on the Gibbon Elevator board for 21 years, four of them as president, was a member of the Gibbon Lions Club, co-founder of the Moltke Happy Hustlers, and participated in the plays at church. His hobbies were playing cards, especially Sheephead, listening to old time music, dancing, watching baseball and hunting. Mel will be missed by all those that knew him.
