Published September 29, 2008 11:09 pm - Verdon “Don” Hennen, 80 peacefully passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008 surrounded by his wife and children.

Don, one of ten children born to Lawrence and Cecelia Hennen was raised outside of Marystown, MN. In January 1946, Don enlisted in the Navy and was a cook on a minesweeper. After a tour in the Navy, Don worked at the Skelly Oil station in Belle Plaine then purchased the Skelly Bulk Truck. May 3, 1952 Don married Helen Carlson in Belle Plaine. In October 1959, he and his wife Helen opened Hennen’s Café. Together they operated the café and expanded to include catering services for a total of 41 years in the business. Don was the chef and donut maker, Helen the baker and waitress, their eight children the automated dishwashers! Don was very much involved in his community including school board, parish council, Eucharistic ministry, alter server and 3rd and 4th degree Knight of Columbus at Our Lady of the Prairie Church. In addition, Don drove bus for 35 years, was a member of the Belle Plaine Rotary, Chamber, and the VFW Club and played in baseball and bowling leagues for many years. Don and Helen retired from the café in 2000. Since then his time has been spent playing cards, working puzzles, he had always loved fishing and the outdoors and enjoying the many friends, children and grandchildren. Don is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Ernest and Jenny Carlson; sisters, LaVonne Staack & Nellie Wick; brother, Eldred Hennen; sisters-in-law, Rose Hennen, Mary Kerkow & Lillian Carlson; and brothers-in law, William Simon, Ray Carlson, Ted Carlson, John Carlson & Reno Carlson. He is survived by his wife, Helen Hennen; children, Deb (Pat) Ediger and Nate, Erika & Samantha of Belle Plaine, Nancy (Brendan) Weldon and Amy, Liz, Dan & Matt of Belle Plaine, Brian (Robyn) Hennen and Alicia, Adam & Jordan of Glencoe, Cindy (Gene) Nowak and Jacob, Robert, & Alex of Belle Plaine, Kathy (Wafiq) Fannoun and Jamal, Ayah, Jennah, Malik, Mohammed & Ibreheem of Brooklyn Park, Philip (Rhonda) Hennen and Nicole, Zack & Connor of Minnetrista, Scott (Karen) Hennen and Brandon, Makenzie & Ian of Jordan, Jenny (Jeff) Schipull of Belle Plaine; 2 great grandchildren Elliot and Kennedy Ediger; siblings, Ronald (Marian) Hennen of Belle Plaine, Gerald Hennen of Belle Plaine, Marlene (Milo) Walter of Chaska, Bea Simon of Shakopee, Alvin Hennen of Belle Plaine and Thomas (Carol) Hennen of Shakopee; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elaine Hennen of Jordan, Placidus Wick of Jordan, Richard Staack of Eau Claire, WI, Harry Kerkow of Jordan, Shirley Carlson of Minneapolis, Betty Carlson and Marlene Carlson of Belle Plaine; many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00AM on Wednesday at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00PM at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine and continues Wednesday morning from 8:00-10:30AM at the funeral home. Fr. James Kim will officiate. Interment will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
