Your View: Free Press blew it on Kasota shooting death

By Marc Chadderdon, Nicollet

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment in The Free Press. The stories and headlines from the Kasota shooting incident is what I would expect from a tabloid magazine. Where is objective journalism and proper use of the English language?

The Free Press used the word “slaying” in a headline. This word was certainly inappropriate in this case. The facts in this story took months to develop. In those months, The Free Press ran stories to judge a public servant before his due process.

I would agree that it is much simpler to quote any and everyone making false allegations and maybe it makes for more interesting headlines. I expect more from your “news” paper. Now that the investigation is concluded I’m sure you will correct your inconsistencies by actually gathering facts and reporting from credible sources.

I’m sure this article won’t be on the front page or have an eye-catching headline as the articles from this summer. However, these are the things that are required for a relevant news story.
