Your View: Keep weapons from the mentally ill

— I am writing in response to Ron Yezzi's letter titled "Limiting  assault weapons sales thwarts wrongdoers."

His statements are so typical of the anti-gun people. They have it all wrong. The problem is that they don't understand what they are talking  about.

The anti-gun folks have good intentions but they are wasting their efforts in the wrong  direction.

All you have to do is go to the FBI website: In 2011, there were 12,664 murders -- 8,583 were by  firearms; 323 of these were by rifles of which about 45 are by "assault"  rifles; 496 were killed by blunt objects such as hammers; 728 by hands, fists or feet.

How much plainer can I make it? You are more likely to be killed by someone swinging a hammer than by an "assault" rifle. Your  argument against "assault" rifles has no merit.

Nothing will be gained  by banning the "assault" rifle. Moreover, the ordinary shotgun used for hunting ducks is far more lethal than the "assault" rifle.

Vice President Biden was almost right. Don't believe me? Google AR15 Vs Shotguns on the Internet. You will find several demos which show how much more lethal the shotgun  is at close range than is the AR15.

Mass and serial murderers have always been proved to have a mental problem. If you want to do something about the murder rate, put more effort into keeping weapons of any kind out of the hands of the mentally ill.
