Letters showed reason and rhetoric on climate

The Mankato Free Press

---- — What a contrast in Sunday’s Free Press between Liz Ratcliff’s piece entitled “Climate change is verifiable and threatening” and Charles Krauthammer’s paid polemic underneath it, “‘Settled science’ is mostly a myth.”

The first cites well-researched facts from highly regarded scientific sources; the second regurgitates many old, already repudiated climate denial talking points with a bit of innuendo thrown in just for good measure.

The irony is that Ms. Ratcliff gets paid nothing by expressing her well-reasoned, scientifically accurate concern for the future while Mr. Krauthammer earns millions for spreading falsehoods in defending right-wing ideologies, Fox “News” talking points and fossil fuel interests. The scientists among our founding fathers like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson must be spinning in their graves.

It’s a sad commentary on our country that the same mentality that imprisoned Galileo for speaking the truth in 1633 is alive and well in the U.S. in 2014.
