Your View: Take stand to overturn Defense of Marriage Act

The issue of gay marriage is a topic that always has been of interest to me. If two people are in love, what is the logical explanation for why they cannot show that to one another with marriage?

Currently, two individuals of the same gender cannot marry one another in the state of Minnesota. In fact, in only nine of our 50 states and the District of Columbia are people of the same gender able to marry.

Minnesota’s amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman failed just last month, so thankfully, we are one step closer to a revision so those who are not in a heterosexual relationship can be married and have the same rights.

However, even if a couple travels to a state where gay marriage is legal, our state legally does not have to recognize that marriage.

I believe that we need to take a stand to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. All people should have the right to fall in love and express their love with marriage if they please. Not only should these rights be available for heterosexual couples but for homosexual couples as well.

Sign a pledge, donate money, or volunteer your time to help raise awareness about this very important issue. Help spread equal rights for all people, no matter who they decide to love. Please visit www.freedomtomarry.org for more information.
