According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll, conducted earlier this month, 58 percent of Americans now believe it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married.
Local, state and national officials are also coming out in bipartisan support of equality. President Obama recently became the first sitting president to publicly support same-sex marriage, Gov. Mark Dayton has publicly stated he will sign in support of marriage equality, and Minnesota’s Sen. Branden Petersen (Dist. 35) coauthored legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage.
Additionally, the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Association of Social Workers, American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, American Bar Association, and various religious leaders, corporations, and public figures have voiced their support of marriage equality.
As many know, in Minnesota, SF 925 and HF 1054 — two bills that would amend the state’s definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, are slated for votes this legislative session in the House of Representatives and Senate. As constituents of District 19, we wish to applaud Sen. Kathy Sheran, and Rep. Kathy Brynaert and Rep. Clark Johnson for their support of the freedom to marry.
We are calling upon you, our friends, neighbors, and community members to call or write your representatives to thank them for their support of this important matter — equality for all families.
We encourage you to ask them to be champions of the cause and to advocate to their colleagues to vote “yes.” As proclaimed in the state’s Rotunda at Freedom to Marry Day, now is the time, this is the year.
