Your View: Most Americans can handle gun ownership

By Neal H. Lund, North Mankato

— Why are Congress and the Minnesota Legislature wasting time on so-called "gun-control" legislation? The legal firearms we have today have been available for many years. The term "assault weapon" is just a buzzword created by left-wing media and anti-gun zealots.

True assault weapons are used by our military/police services and are not available to us under current law. They include the M-14/16 and M-60, etc., and are all fully-automatic.

According to many members of Congress, what left-wing radicals want is "people control."

There are an estimated 300,000,000 firearms in the United States. It would require a Gestapo-type police state to confiscate them. That is not what Americans want.

Our nation is battling a growing culture of violence. Just watch the movies and TV. Guns are not the problem.

The Second Amendment to our Constitution is very clear in its wording and intent. Most Americans can handle the responsibility of gun ownership, despite what the current president and other anti-gun spokespersons say.

More than two thirds of America's land mass are states that do not want or need additional gun legislation. Let's get on to directing our efforts on stopping the inevitable collapse of our economy and the increasing flow of illegal immigrants and drugs.

To quote two of our greatest presidents who were also strong Second Amendment advocates: "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow those who do not" -- Thomas Jefferson. "We need a nation of Minutemen citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life." -- John F. Kennedy.
