Your View: Legislator welcomes comments on water usage

— The Free Press editorial "DNR falls short on enforcing permits" was a wake-up call for attention to a situation needing immediate action. At a time when changing weather patterns are causing increasing concern over the possibility of drought conditions perhaps becoming the new normal in Minnesota, it is shocking to learn that a large number of commercial users are drawing far more than their allotted share from our groundwater sources.

At special risk are the major aquifers which are being depleted much faster than they can be recharged, even if rainfall patterns should return to previous levels.

Rep. Clark Johnson (District 19A) sits on the Policy Subcommittee of the House Committee on Natural Resources and the Environment. He will welcome public comment and support for efforts to rectify flagrant disregard of mandated limits on permissible levels of water usage.
