Your View: Story is proof of government inadequacy

— An article from Wednesday's Free Press, "Shift to health vouchers starting slowly," shows us just how ineffective our state and federal governments' policies have been when addressing the medical needs of our residents.

Simply because Judie Nyholm earned $52 too much during one month, she lost her state-subsidized health insurance. It seems quite unfair that recipients of health care coverage through the government should lose it because of small fluctuations of income, like that experienced by Nyholm.

Hearing her story in the context of today's economy and the changes that are anticipated regarding federal health care, it is especially important that we are encouraging policy makers to avoid falling into the same old routine of nit-picky eligibility requirements when the goal of such services is to help Americans live better lives, not learn the nuances of filling out paperwork.
