By Dan Linehan
Free Press Staff Writer

The 2010 census, briefly

What is it?
Every 10 years, the census counts everyone living in the United States

When does it start?
Workers will walk the streets to verify addresses in April, but census questionnaires won’t be mailed until early 2010.

What’s the point?
It’s required by the U.S. Constitution. Census data is used to distribute congressional seats and hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds.

What’s the pay?
It depends on position and location, but field workers start at $11.50 per hour and office workers start at $9.25 or $9.50 per hour.
