In the days following the Virgina Tech University shooting a year ago, parents of college students across the country began calling colleges asking the same question: ‘What are you doing to make sure my child is safe?’
Many schools didn’t know how to answer that question.
Bethany Lutheran College wasn’t one of those schools.
When those parents called, Vice President for Student Affairs Steve Jaeger was ready. The college was already in the process, he told them, of installing a public address system in every building. In the event of a school shooting, everyone on campus could be notified immediately of the danger.
That system is now up and running. And while there’s never going to be a way to eliminate danger entirely, Bethany says it has instituted the best system it can think of.
