NORTH MANKATO
Sat, May 17 2008
—
The judge had barely even begun the question when Mankato Loyola Knowledge Bowl participant Andrew Thom had a premonition.
It was a long-shot, but Thom buzzed in anyway.
“Neville Chamberlain,” he said in a voice more inquisitive than declarative, hoping the former United Kingdom prime minister was the right answer.
And while Thom’s answer was incorrect, it’s notable because the Loyola Blue team didn’t have many wrong answers during Friday’s regional Knowledge Bowl competition. The Loyola Blue team finished second out of almost 30 teams, sandwiched between two Minnesota Valley Lutheran teams that finished first and third. Finishing in fourth and fifth place were Le Sueur-Henderson Jade and Fairmont Rojo, respectively.
The top five teams advance to the state tournament in April.
“We did really well,” said Thom, whose team also included John Fleming, Thomas Cullen and Anne Marzinske. “We finished higher today than in the sub-regionals.”
