School districts eyeing cuts
Waseca grapples with $400,000 shortfall

By Tanner Kent

The Waseca School District won’t be alone.

The School Board meets at 5 p.m. tonight in the high school media center to face a $400,000 budget shortfall. Several staff positions could be cut. Law, cheer and speech teams are on the block. And so is the swim team.

On March 17, the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva School Board met to discuss nearly $300,000 in budget reductions. Staff cuts are certain. Referendum plans are already being discussed. The elimination of all-day kindergarten and consolidation of grades into the New Richland and Ellendale buildings will also be considered before the final decisions April 21.

St. Clair Supt. Tom Bruels said his district is facing a significant number of personnel reductions. Several other rural districts in the area will also have to trim staff. More than 1,000 teacher layoffs have been predicted statewide.
