“You want a beer?” he says to a couple of visitors who have stopped by. No thanks, Harold. We’re on duty. The sum of yourself might hit the spot, though. Runck, in a stocking cap and work jacket to ward off the spring chill, plops down in a chair. He fidgets with his cane and rubs a knee. Balky, century-old wheels have a way of crimping a guy’s style. “If it wouldn’t be for my legs, I’d feel 50 years old.” Not that Runck still can’t get in a good day’s work on his farmstead just outside New Ulm. Put it this way: Find another 100-year-old who not only splits his own firewood but clambers up hillsides to fetch it first. Even hip-replacement surgery a couple of years ago can’t stop this guy, who eschews pills in all forms, can do without his reading glasses if the light is ample, and warms to a cold brew on hot days.
