Eleven U.S. war veterans were honored at Old Main Village in a Memorial Day fete Friday, though the group’s most decorated member had to take a pass.
As the hour-long program progressed in the retirement community’s lobby and outside plaza, Ken Krause could only sit in his apartment above.
“I went to the window to watch it, and I passed out,” said the 87-year-old former Air Force pilot, who suffers from congestive heart failure.
The ceremony for his fellow Old Main residents included synopses of each one’s service, patriotic songs, and a flag-raising ceremony capped by a rifle salute from the Mankato Area Veterans Memorial Squad.
