NEW: Man removed from roof of church

The Free Press

MANKATO

A bucket truck had to be used to get a man down from a Mankato church’s rooftop last week after he was caught “huffing” Freon from an air-conditioning unit.

An employee at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 202 Warren St., reported at 10:46 a.m. Friday that someone was on the roof sniffing Freon to get high. It wasn’t clear how the man had gotten on the roof.

A police officer arrived and found Matthew Thomas Hoffman, 20, on the roof. A fire truck with a lift and bucket had to be called to get Hoffman down, Mankato police said.

Hoffman, who has no permanent address, was jailed until he could make a court appearance today.
