Many kids will be starting school this year with a backpack full of school supplies thanks to the Salvation Army and River Hills Mall.

The Caring Tree will go up Aug. 1 in the mall. Those wishing to donate just need to take a name of a child and purchase supplies, then return them to the mall, similar to the Holiday Sharing Tree process.

“With the economy the way it is, we will probably see an increase of kids,” said Robin Tietz, administrative assistant at the Salvation Army.

For the remainder of July, the Salvation Army will be taking names of families in need. Those living in Blue Earth County or North Mankato simply need to register with the Salvation Army or with the county.

Last year, the program gave 800 kids much needed school supplies. There were 500 students “adopted,” while 300 were purchased by the Salvation Army.

“The Army always has said, ‘No kid will be left out,’” Tietz said.

To help the Salvation Army with those cards that don’t get picked up, or if you don’t like to shop, monetary donations are always welcome, she said.

Though the numbers are expected to increase, Tietz is optimistic about the community’s ability to help.

“In the 16 years I’ve worked at the Army, one thing I’ll say about this community, they will step up to the plate.”

The Caring Tree will be in the River Hills Mall from Aug. 1-15. For more information, contact the Salvation Army at (507)345-7840.
