BLUE EARTH
—
A domestic dispute in rural Blue Earth led to an armed standoff with authorities that ended when the suspect surrendered five hours later.
Kevin Robert Karl, 29, of Blue Earth, has been charged in Faribault County District Court on two felony counts of second-degree assault, and two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and reckless use of a dangerous weapon.
Authorities received a frantic call late Thursday from a woman who said her 5-year-old daughter was inside a rural Blue Earth residence with Karl, who was armed and had threatened her.
When authorities arrived, court documents say, the woman was outside the home hiding behind a tree and talking to a 911 dispatcher on her cell phone.
After the woman got inside the squad car of the first responding officer, authorities say, shots were heard coming from the house.
The deputy reportedly told the woman to get down as he drove away from the house.
The woman then told authorities Karl had been drinking and was upset because he believed she’d been cheating on him. He told her to move out.
According to reports, while the woman waited for a ride, Karl at one point picked up a gun. He reportedly then grabbed the woman and fired several shots into the garage and an air conditioner.
He then threw the woman to the ground, documents say, then picked her up and threw her down again. She then left the residence and called for help.
Various law enforcement agencies and SWAT teams arrived to help the Faribault County Sheriff’s Department. Eventually Karl emerged from the residence and surrendered to authorities.
The child was uninjured.
