Software glitches, long loading times and system problems marred the state’s first attempt at an online MCA II science exam this year. Despite the challenges, more than 150,000 students took the test this year with only about 40 percent scoring at or above proficiency level.

The MCA-II science test is an extension of the growing demand for schools to offer science, math and technology courses. The state is revising science standards and has initiated statewide teaching academies to give educators extra skills and resources.

The science exam — given in fifth grade, eighth grade and high school — does not count toward No Child Left Behind standards or state graduation requirements. The test data will be used to create a baseline for future proficiency standards and trend comparisons.
