---- — ST. PETER — A major construction project, complete with a major detour, is scheduled to begin Monday west of St. Peter.

The nearly $1.8 million project involves complete reconstruction of a portion of Nicollet County Road 5 (also known as the Fort Road). The project also will add right and left turn lanes at County Road 40 about a mile and a half west of St. Peter and install concrete surfacing.

Work on the east-west road, which bisects the county from St. Peter to FortRidgely, is being done by Mathiowetz Construction Co. of Sleepy Eye. Traffic will be detoured at St. Peter along Highway 99. After about six miles, detoured traffic will turn north on County Road 13 and reconnect with County Road 5 after roughly four more miles.

The Nicollet County Public Works Department advises drivers to allot extra time to reach their destination.
