Date set for Rapidan Dam bike ride (with pie)

The Mankato Free Press

---- — MANKATO — Those who enjoy miles upon miles of open road on bicycles tend to be pretty healthy people.

But that doesn’t mean they can’t treat themselves once in a while. And few would argue that the pie at the Rapidam Dam Store is one of the best treats in southern Minnesota.

Many individual bikers and even annual biking events, such as the popular River Ramble, incorporate the Dam Store into their tours and events. The annual “Dam Bike Ride!” sponsored by Minnesota State University Student Activities is one of them.

Student Activities announced the date for this year’s ride is 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 23.

Bicyclists will meet at the Centennial Student Union on the MSU campus and head off in succession to the dam and back. At the Dam Store, riders have the option to take a break for a slice of homemade pie, said coordinator Ashley Strom in an email release.

The 12-mile ride is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

The rain date is Wednesday, July 24.

The hydroelectric Rapidan Dam was built in 1910 and began supplying electricity to the area in 1911. It allowed people to have electricity long before other rural areas in the nation.

There’s also a pedestrian and bike trail across the deck of the dam. Bikers or walkers using the Red Jacket trail from Mankato to Rapidan can use the side of the road from Rapidan to near the dam to get onto the trail link.

The dam is featured in the new MN150 exhibit at the Minnesota History Center and featured in the book, “Minnesota 150: The People, Places and Things that Shape Our State,” by Kate Roberts.
