The Mankato Free Press
---- — In an somewhat unpredictable result, respondents to The Free Press online poll seem to favor having a free press in their society.
The question was: Friday is National Press Freedom Day. Do you think a free press is still important to a democratic society?
The most-clicked answer by far — with 85 percent of the vote (88 votes) — was this: “Yes. We still need people to hold the government accountable.”
Only 8 percent (7 votes) chose this opposing view: “No. We no longer need a free press to be the watchdog of our government.”
The results appear to run contrary to what respondents have said in the past. In some online polls, readers have been highly critical of the media, often suggesting through answers and comments on our Facebook page that the media are contributing to growing displeasure the public has with government.
The Free Press poll is not scientific. Visit mankatofreepress.com to weigh in on our latest question: “Local governments are seriously considering coming together to build a sport complex. Do you think a sports complex will add to our regional appeal?”
