---- — MANKATO — Mankato Public Schools, along with most others in the area are closed Friday.
Mankato and some others had initially tried for a two-hour late start, but called off classes as road conditions remained poor.
South Central College is closed and Minnesota State University is starting classes at 10 a.m., although it is up to each instructor to determine whether to hold classes.
Many area highways remained closed as of 8 a.m., as motorists were faced with closed gates or were turned away by law enforcement.
Roads in the cities of Mankato and North Mankato were mostly plowed and in fair condition, although they remain ice-packed.
Power was out throughout the night in much of downtown Mankato and some other parts of Mankato and North Mankato, with service restored early Friday morning.
Ice packed power lines, blown by high winds, caused arcing that resulted in power outages throughout the region. Most power was restored this morning, including in the St. Clair, Garden City and Vernon Center areas, although sporadic outages were still reported.
