MANKATO — A bar scuffle that started after a man asked a woman he didn't know if she wanted to dance has resulted in an assault charge being filed against the woman's boyfriend.
Police officers were called downtown at about 1:22 a.m. Thursday, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday in Blue Earth County District Court . A man there, who is only identified as I.Z. in the criminal complaint, told the officers he had been assaulted while he was in the Red Rocks bar.
The man said he had ordered a beer in the downtown bar before walking over to the dance area and asking a woman if she had a boyfriend. A short time after she said she did, another man, identified as 24-year-old Jesse Joseph Mulhollam of Mankato, allegedly walked up to the victim, pushed him around a few times and punched him in the face. The victim also reported Mulhollam pushed the woman down after attacking him.
Another person in the bar told an officer the woman was alone and dancing around a pole on the dance floor before she was approached by the victim. That person said Mulhollam and the woman looked like they were "bickering" before Mulhollam pushed and punched the victim, who didn't do anything to Mulhollam.
A bouncer at the bar also told an officer the victim hadn't done anything to Mulhollam, who had left the bar.
Officers were able to identify Mulhollam because witnesses said his hand was bleeding. While the officers were still at the bar, a woman called from Mulhollam's residence on Pohl Road to report a man there had a cut hand that required medical attention. Mulhollam was arrested and brought back to the bar, where the victim identified him as the assailant.
Mulhollam appeared in court Thursday afternoon for a third-degree assault charge.
