NEW ULM — A 51-year-old Mankato man was killed in a New Ulm car crash Friday and his 82-year-old mother was in serious condition after their vehicle was struck by a New Ulm Police Department squad car.

Brian Bruce Wichmann of 102 Jaybee Lane died in the crash at 1:40 p.m. Friday on North Garden Street in New Ulm.

Myra Ann Meyer, 82, of 1021 N. Garden St. was driving a 1994 Mercury Sable northwest on Garden Street when she turned left into a driveway and was struck by the police squad car, according to the Minnesota State Patrol, which was investigating the crash.

The squad, a Ford Crown Victoria, was heading southeast, driven by patrol officer Mathew Rasmussen, who has seven years of police experience and 18 months with the New Ulm Police Department.

Wichmann was transported to the New Ulm Medical Center but died of his injuries. Meyer was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she was listed in serious condition late Saturday night.

Rasmussen, suffering what was believed to be a broken arm, was treated at the New Ulm Medical Center. All three were wearing seat belts.

Along with New Ulm police, others responding to the crash were the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Allina ambulance and the New Ulm Fire Department. The investigation by the State Patrol is continuing.
