United Way honors businesses, volunteers

NORTH MANKATO — Greater Mankato Area United Way handed out awards Friday to businesses and volunteers for their dedication to the agency and the nonprofits it serves.

United Way chose Bremer Bank as its Small Business of the Year. The business had 100 percent employee participation in United Way giving this year, which helped to increase their campaign by 20 percent over last year.

The Medium Business of the Year award was presented to United Prairie Bank. The business has continued to see an increase in its United Way campaign each year. Its campaign grew by 560 percent over the past five years.

Snell Motors was named United Way's Large Business of the Year. This year Snell Motors employees contributed more than $12,000 to United Way.

Shannon Gullickson was United Way's choice for Volunteer of the Year. Gullickson volunteers with United Way and many other community organizations. She has been a United Way board member for the past six years. Since then, she has served on the marketing committee, a campaign volunteer, a community impact volunteer and on the Women with Heart committee, chairing the event in 2012. In 2013, she was United Way Board chairwoman and was an integral member of the search committee charged with hiring a new president for Greater Mankato Area United Way.

More than 300 individuals volunteer their time with Greater Mankato Area United Way each year, and about 200 businesses and 7,500 individuals share their resources with United Way each year.

This year's area United Way campaign is expected to raise more than $2 million.

About 130 people attended the United Way thank-you luncheon Friday at South Central College.
