MANKATO — Natural gas released, as designed, through a pressure valve resulted in a temporary closure of a portion of Third Avenue in Mankato Tuesday morning.
Gas was released into the air to relieve pressure in system, said Rebecca Virden, CenterPoint Energy spokeswoman. Someone called 911 to report the release after hearing a loud noise just after 6 a.m.
Firefighters and police officers were sent to the site and found the valve was still making a loud noise. They called CenterPoint staff to check the valve to make sure it was working properly, which it was. Third Avenue was closed from Highway 14 to Summit Avenue for about 90 minutes while the valve was checked. The westbound off ramp from Highway 14 to Third Avenue also was closed.
Virden said it is more common for pressure to build up in the system when it's cold due to the increased demand for natural gas. She also said, even though the system was working properly, its good for people to make a 911 call if they think there could be a problem.
